Viscose, a material often hailed as a sustainable alternative to traditional materials, has captured the attention of designers and consumers alike. Let's embark on a journey to uncover the intricacies of viscose and explore why it's becoming a staple in modern fashion.
What is Viscose?
Viscose, also known as rayon, is a man-made cellulosic fibre (MMCF) derived from natural sources. It’s often hailed as a more sustainable alternative to cotton or polyester. Through a chemical process, these raw materials are transformed into a soft, breathable fabric with a smooth texture, reminiscent of silk.
How is Viscose Made?
The production of viscose requires several stages. Viscose begins with cellulose, extracted from fast-growing regenerative trees like eucalyptus, beech and pine. The cellulose materials go through dissolution. Dissolution dissolves the cellulose material in a chemical solution, creating a pulpy viscous substance. The viscous substance is then extruded forming the fibres. The fibres are then spun into threads which are then woven into fabric.
Sustainable Fashion with Viscose
Viscose has emerged as a key player in sustainable fashion due to its eco-friendly attributes. Unlike synthetic fibres derived from petrochemicals, viscose is made from renewable plant-based sources, making it biodegradable and compostable.
Additionally, innovations in production techniques have led to the development of eco-friendly viscose, such as EcoVero™, which adheres to strict environmental standards and ensures transparency in the supply chain.
Sustainable Doubts with Viscose
Many question the sustainability of viscose for various reasons.
One of them being its manufacturing process involving chemicals. However, advancements in technology have led to more eco-friendly production methods, such as closed-loop systems that minimise waste and emissions.
Another doubt is the lack of transparency in the supply chains. As a result of lack of transparency, consumers are unsure of where the wood pulp comes from. Without clear information, consumers cannot make informed choices about the environmental impact of the specific viscose they purchase.

Caring for Viscose Fabric
Caring for your viscose pieces is relatively easy.
To prolong the life of your viscose garments, hand wash or use the washing machine with a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Viscose is prone to shrinkage, hence your viscose should be air-dried flat to prevent distortion of the clothing. Ironing should be done on a low heat setting with steam to remove wrinkles and restore the fabric's lustre.
Viscose versatility, eco-friendly attributes, and luxurious texture make it a favoured choice among designers and consumers seeking ethical and elegant apparel. As we continue to choose sustainability, we can make a positive impact with viscose on both fashion and the environment.
